Full-wave Imaging
 

Bulwark - ION is committed to leading the E&P into the next era of seismic imaging, which we call Digital, full-wave. In order to take advantage of the full-wave data recorded by 3C, MEMS-based sensors like VectorSeis®, geophysicists need to apply advanced processing algorithms to the raw data output. Our technology foundation in full-wave imaging is underpinned by two of the leading names in complex data processing - GX Technology (GXT) and AXIS Geophysics.

Following the acquisition of GX Technology (GXT) in 2004, the full-wave capabilities and research programs of AXIS and GXT have been combined into a single, unified platform.
 

The company has already developed and demonstrated an advanced, highly efficient algorithm for vector filtering, which is used by ION and its acquisition partners to remove (in processing) source-generated noise recorded by VectorSeis single-point sensors. The combination of VectorSeis and vector filtering generally delivers and enhanced (higher bandwidth) p-wave signal compared to acquisition with receiver arrays, particularly when impulsive sources are used.

Bulwark/GXT has also processed converted wave data both onshore and offshore, revealing subtle subsurface features for the E&P operators that commissioned the projects.

Longer-term research (and pilot projects) are focused on improving the utility and efficiency of processing and interpreting full-wave (multicomponent) data, especially in complex acquisition environments like the Arctic, desert, shallow water and ocean bottom as well as when imaging fractured reservoirs.
